Hacking together a quick JSON reader/writer for my Arduino. Probably been done before, but it’s something useful to get back in the swing of this whole Arduino programming lark. View

I know there’s a meeting scheduled for tonight, but I can’t make it I’m afraid. Been coerced into dog-sitting for someone, quite out of the blue.

Here’s a link to my Arduino JSON sketch -> http://gitorious.org/arduino-json-client
Setting pin modes and writing digital output works, but I’m not sure about reading values yet (I got some pretty funky output, but that may have been due to my cobbled-together serial-reading console ;) )

In reply to: Perry posted an update in the group ShackNet: Great, found this group. Heard about Arduino for a few years, only recently got an ’excuse’ to play with it: building a (bipolar) stepper motor controller for […] View

I’ve not had much experience with motor controllers yet, all I know is that the Arduino’s pins alone don’t provide enough current to drive them, so they require some indirect control (eg. via a transistor). Sounds like the shield you have should take care of that though, so I can only recommend breadboarding something and seeing what happens.…[Read more]

In reply to: Ryan McClean posted an update in the group RepRap: Hello RepRappers, Do you still meet up once in a while? Ryan View

Indeed we do! The next meeting is Monday I believe :) Due to the amount of cross-membership, and to keep organisation easier, the physical, IRL groups for RepRap and Shacknet (Arduino hacking) have merged into ”Sheffield Hardware Hackers and Makers”. The next meeting’s Monday I believe (see the ”What’s on” box on the left of the GIST Hub homepage)

Just found this Javascript Arduino Uno interface. Not played with it yet though, will have to wait until I get home http://www.schillmania.com/projects/arduino-js/

Actually, scratch that it also uses Flash, which I don’t allow on my machines :(

HI, I’ve been looking for something like this as well and so looked at that site and found this mentioned at the top https://github.com/voodootikigod/node-arduino

that is a library for the Node.js javascript webserver for talking to arduino.

Ooo very nice, thanks for this :) For my current project I’ve been trying to send JSON back and forth over serial, eg. send ‘{“digitalread”:5, “digitalread”:2, “analoguewrite”: {“pin”:3, “value”:512}}’, get back ‘{“digitalvalue”:{“pin”:5, “value”:1}, “digitalvalue”:{“pin”:2, “value”:0}}’. This quite a high-level thing to…[Read more]

Hod Lipson’s doing some amazing stuff. Not come across that paper in particular, I’ll give it a read tonight. Loads more at http://creativemachines.cornell.edu/publications . The “Fab@home” ones will probably interest members here, as that’s a similar machine to the RepRap, but it doesn’t attempt to be self-printable. They generally use…[Read more]

Found this earlier, a machine made of LEGO which builds arbitrary objects out of LEGO blocks http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/10/10/20/1348206/A-3D-Lego-Fabricator-Made-of-Lego

What I find so cool about this is that it’s essentially an abstraction layer over a RepRap. Build a RepRap to print LEGO blocks (patents expired ages ago), then build a…[Read more]

Scratch for Arduino: http://smalltalk.cat/blog/Scratch+For+Arduino+(S4A) Scratch is a drag ’n’ drop programming system built on top of Smalltalk. Scratch for Arduino makes Scratch objects representing the Arduino hardware, which can then be arranged into a script. The Arduino runs some custom firmware which communicates with the host PC every 75ms.

Just to let the group know, I’ve now got a full time job with ocProducts, so the RepRap will have to move on to something of a backburner. I can’t make it to the lab now, but John doesn’t mind the machine moving temporarily, eg. to the gist lab or access space, if it’ll get working quicker (eg. via some evening tinkering by the RepRap &…[Read more]

Yup spent the day with it yesterday. The Design of The Darwin Z axis is such that it nicely summs up all the friction of the four lift posts and dumps it on the one stepper motor. I realigned the frame and be yesterday and adjusted some of the tension out of the anti backlash spring assemblies. It seems to run a lot better now but is still in need…[Read more]

Played with the RapMan a bit more on Friday. Thanks for the filament Andy! Got the Z axis moving again, but it’s still a bit jerky. The good news is that I’ve tested the extruder and the heater works, the thermistor works (which is the one I was worried about) and the stepper works. The filament goes in fine, but nothing’s coming out of the…[Read more]

It’s extruding! Turns out the rollers were the wrong way around (I didn’t assemble that part!) so it’s giving out nice tangled plastic squiggles :D Now to get it printing test objects :)

Wow excellent, well done chris. The worm feed extruder’s are a bit error prone but will get you to the stage of being able to printout a new extruder model. Most folk are going with variants of the Wade geared pinch roller design these days. Looking forward to dropping by on Thursday AM to have a look. Sounds like you are not far of finished…[Read more]

Oh forgot to mention. Find a thermometer that will read the temps at the nozzle and check that what you set is what you get. Knowing what the error values (If any) are for a range of temps will help you later. Or at least give you confidence in it’s capabilities.

I love what this guy gets up to! Taken the cheap laser from his DIY laser sintering machine and built a (small) laser cutter using the laser-moving mechanisms from some CD drives as the X, Y & Z axes! http://builders.reprap.org/2010/08/selective-laser-sintering-part-8.html

Yes they are really cool, a tiny build area but very high resolution. They would be perhaps at their best used as part of a microscope setup. You could use it to image a larger slide area at highest magnification and stitch the images together. Using a cheap USB microscope.

I am not sure who would have a use for that (crystallographers or forgers…[Read more]

Saw these in the RepRap blog but didn’t download the videos until I saw this post. Very impressive indeed! Part of me wonders how many takes he really took to get it that seamless ;) Also, as a feature request, I would appreciate a 25000x speedup button on the next RepRap version :P
