I’ve just come back from my first time at the Sheffield Linux User Group. It was a meeting held in the Walkley Cottage with three older guys who were all very knowledgeable about Linux and open-source software in general. When I entered the pub I wasn’t sure who to look for, but soon spotted the three guys round a table with netbooks and a…[Read more]

Is anyone here going to BarCamp Manchester tomorrow (Sat Aug 21st) at MADLAB? I only got my ticket yesterday after they’d originally sold out and more became available.

PHP User Group: 1 year, 9 months agoI enjoyed last night’s meeting. As I said in the introductions, PHP is not something I’m currently using, but is a language I’m planning to learn in the near future. I came away from last night with a much better understanding of what PHP can do. I’ll definitely be attending the next one.

Great session at tonight’s XP Manchester. 16 people attended, with a mixture of junior and senior developers, along with a few team leaders and managers. First 90 minutes was a discussion on XP, including general principles and how to sell the benefits of XP to managers. We then finished off with a simple coding kata on how to write unit tests…[Read more]

In reply to: David JM Emmett posted an update in the group Ruby User Group: Just had an incredible talk from Jan Wedekind (http://www.wedesoft.demon.co.uk/) on his research project Hornetseye. ViewI was impressed by last night’s SHRUG talk as well. Jan was a well-chosen speaker with some fascinating examples of image recognition. More like him please!

In reply to: Karl Buckland posted an update in the group Gnu/Linux: Hi, who uses what flavour? I’ve had a little experience with a lot of flavours but I mostly use CentOS. ViewI’ve tried Ubuntu but have always been a Fedora user. I’ve installed every Fedora version since 2 and set up Fedora 13 over the weekend. It’s a dual-boot laptop with Windows Vista.
