So, I’m at Bar Camp Sheffield right now and I’ve just been in a ‘morning papers’ session and we were discussing ‘the wedding’ and  an idea occurred to us and I don’t know where else to post this but I need to put it somewhere so I can link to it. Last year on the 1st [...]

At about half past midnight, I wrote my 50,071st word and submitted it to the the official word counter, thus “winning” NaNoWriMo 2010 . My novel, Great Things is a story about a group of friends who live quite normal lives and struggle with making the transition into being “proper” grown ups. NaNoWriMo demands that you keep [...]

  • Hi All,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I’ve written a blog today and wondered if I could get some comments?

Generally, the book reviews for this site will be academic papers or books but this is my most recent read and I was suprised by how much I enjoyed it so I thought I’d review it. I have a tendency to be light…[Read more]

    • Generally good stuff, I think there’s room for a bit more of the ‘Hannah’ experience to come though there without it sounding too light-hearted as it’s a little too dry in tone right now for my taste.

Make the title more informative for the web e.g.: Book Review: Sandokan (N. Balestrani) – The Story of the Camorra or similar.

      Other than…[Read more]

      • Ah! Thanks Paul, I didn’t think anyone would actually reply!

Okey doke, will think through your comments. I think bloggings going to take me a while to get into as normally, I’ll re-write until it looks nothing like it orginally did but with blogs I just post them then go back an tweak which is a bad habit :-) Looking at it now I’m already…[Read more]

    • Hello Hannah. I agree with Paul, ‘generally good stuff’. The only two comments I offer are that longer and fewer paragraphs might help it to flow more and, as Paul noted, it needs more ‘Hannah’ in it; the best book reviews to my mind are interesting because of the ‘added value’ provided by the reviewer (I liked the relative trifle bit). And…[Read more]

I’ve just started my second week of NaNoWriMo and I’ve reached the respectable count of 14,452 words. Now that most of the characters and plot elements have been introduced I’m finding I can rattle out 1,000 words in an hour, which is an improvement on the 600-or-so I was managing at the start of the [...]

At the latest gathering of GIST Write! Lab writers, we had a quick think about audience. Why should the author care about the audience? helps you keep a consistent and appropriate tone the audience know facts – they will pick you up the audience know your genre helps the author pitch to publishers Some handy questions to help focus [...]

Four days in to NaNoWriMo and I’m learning a lot already. I’ve learned two things in particular about character introductions. The first lesson came from the very first scene. I decided to start the novel with a pivotal moment for the main group of characters, and start the protagonist on the wrong foot. However because [...]

  • This is the first 1000 words of the story.  It’s not had any editing – my intention is to get the whole thing written first then do an edit / re-write after that.  Having said that, I can see a few typos, and a couple of style points that suck.  There’s also some dialogue I’m not [...]

  • Matthew Mella wrote a new blog post 50,000 words or bust in the group Group logo of Write!Write!: 1 year, 6 months ago

I’m taking advantage of GIST Write! Lab to help me through National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short). The event started in the US in 1999 and challenges participants to write 50,000 words starting on 1 November and finishing on 30th November. The event is now global, and in 2009 over 170,000 people took part. [...]

  • As folks who were at the GIST Write meet heard, I somehow managed to volunteer to do four short stories over the month of November. I also thought it might be useful / interesting / amusing for folks if I posted the odd blog post to let you know how I was progressing.  In terms [...]
