Any suggestions for the Installing, set-up, use + GO! session for next month?

I was initially thinking about looking into a MAMP/XAMP maybe USB install on a local machine but this is a bit long-winded and hard to explain so I wouldn’t mind using a dummy domain on my host and sticking a vanilla install together for that.

    Anyone have any other ideas?

On a domain would be easiest. I’d have thought, the local version may become a bit complicated given the number of platforms.

I may have a few friends coming next month specifically for this session.

    Hey Chris,

Session is about 3 weeks away so plenty of time for me to set this up. I will get a dummy domain set up with FTP a database etc and run though the process from start to finish.

A quick brain dump of the topics should be:

    – General server discussion & requirements
    – Explanation of WP core files/folders
    – Introduction to wp-config.php
    – Uploading core files/folders
    – Configuring wp-config.php
    —- Database connection
    —- Table prefix
    —- Salts
    —- Other wp-config.php features for example ‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’
    – The installation process
    —- Picking a username
—- Logging in for the first time
    – Dashboard quick overview
    – Must-have settings

That should do it, in reality its about 10/20 minutes work but with discussion and questions probably an hour.

    All looks good.
I think we’ve gone over ‘must have’ plugins before, but it may be worth touching on that again. And maybe (if we have time) look at some functions stuff for things like thumbnails and post types?

Cheers, hopefully some other members will jump in with feedback soon :)

Yeh we can do a quick plugin tour, how to install from the dashboard etc, maybe test some out like a contact form or the SEO pack.

    Nice work …
    - Domain-wise we can probably create something off the GIST domain suite if you want.
    - We had a decent essential post-install discussion, so seeing some of those in action would be good.
    - We did indeed do plugins to die for, so it could be good to get some context for those, but to keep the focus in this installation session, I’d stick to really only the properly essential and freely available ones – stuff like SEO plugins, Gravity Forms or Contact Forms 7 have too many settings, config options and uses to do justice in this session. (A future session on cool things to do with forms might be good though.)

I’m thinking this would be a really good session to (a) video and (b) screencast – a great resource to add to the group’s body of knowledge, as well as help future new starters get on board and off to a good grounding … What do you think? Any objections to the former? Got some good tools to do the latter?

No need to source a domain, I will set one up before hand and populate with files so we don’t have to watch the FTP upload :)

    Screencast/Video would be great.

+1 on the video/screencast front. unfortunately I no longer have access to video equipment.

Session sounds like it’s going to be really good for getting new people up to speed really quickly and the rest of us learning neat little extras or shortcuts.
