Hi All,
I’d like to run an informal session on stress ‘managment’ within our group.
The economy downturn is really starting to bite at the moment in terms of actual impact on our lives but also on our moods. We’ve noticed a shift in language, attitude and behaviour amongst ourselves and those coming in to use the space.
We’d like to explore (sounds a bit naff but unsure of best word?) what, if anything GIST can do to help people who use our space during this time. Perhaps we need some sort of ‘wellbeing’ commitments, to help identify levels of stress amongst us so that we’d know if/ when to intervene if members seem distressed? Or maybe we need to have volunteer sessions at our Jelly/ Collabolab events for discussing new employment/ freelance work?
‘Stress management workshops’ for a lot of us, conjure up an image of events dedicated to nothing but appeasing overworked staff where you’ll be asked to work overtime to make up the half day spent airing grievances that won’t be resolved. The GIST Foundation is not an employer so we won’t be promising any changes to the situations that cause you stress. We can however, offer, in a way an employer can’t, genuine friendship and support. And, we think amongst the many of you involved in activities, you could offer support too.
Stress is often associated with a lack of control or support. We think getting together and sharing our experiences and tips; drinking some herbal tea; playing on Wii Fit Yoga; practicing breathing exercises; and just making some time to relax, laugh will help. Just be supported and supportive.
If you’d like to attend please let me know so I can work it out. I think it will run at the GIST Lab from about 2pm on Wednesday 3rd November and end a little while before GIST Mag. So as to reduce my own stress levels, I’m planning nothing in advance except getting the Wii Fit from home to the lab and purchasing some herbal tea. Given the fact that times are hard and I’m not planning a massive event, I don’t think we’ll charge, however times are hard for us all and we would encourage you to make a donation for the refreshments because otherwise they’re coming straight out of my own pocket.
If you have any ideas or want to run a talk/ session please do suggest it, we’re open to ideas.
Best wishes,
Hannah x
