I'm definitely a software person. I took EE in school and made an LED class, then a small computer like everyone else, and I know my volts and my amps for the most part, but that's about it. The limits of my skills are somewhere around adding an LED and some resistors to leech power off a USB adapter (which I recently did while working on the Hanselcade retro arcade build ). I look at hardware guys like Clint Rutkas in awe . I mean, seriously, who builds a T-shirt cannon from scratch for fun ? Amazing. Clint sent me a "Netduino" board today. We haven't hit our arbitrary $50k goal, but I'm totally amazed we made it this far, using only and entirely social media . I can't make it to the lab now, but John doesn't mind the machine moving temporarily, eg. to the gist lab or access space, if it'll get working quicker (eg. via some evening tinkering by the RepRap & Shacknet people). We'll have to sort such an arrangement out properly with John first though.

The RepRap itself, as Andy said, is pretty near completion. The Z axis is playing up (it's been dodgy since the start), which will either need a simple tightening/lubricating/gluing/etc. which is just a matter of figuring out where; or else it may all be misaligned and need some hardcore tinkering. If Andy made it into the lab today then he'll probably be able to give a much better estimate on this (he might've even got it running smoothly ;) )

My favourite project to date was converting a HP t5700 thin client into a game testing box. After trying a couple of different cheap thin clients I chanced upon this model. I upgraded the RAM to 512mb whipped out the ROM chip so it would look for boot images on attached USB devices then I installed Xubuntu on an 8GB USB stick. Once it was up and running I installed Java dev tools and now if we have a game that needs a lot of play testing on the server side I run a cut down version of the client side in command line on this little, silent, low power consuming, box and leave it running playing the game. It can play around 100,000 sessions of our games in a couple of hours.

Does anyone have linux running on their toaster? :P
