The GIST Foundation

The GIST Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable company whose goal is to be a sustainable resource that encourages and supports community-driven grassroots innovation. The Foundation provides the long-term structure necessary to build on the hugely successful activities produced since bringing GeekUp to Sheffield in May 2008, offering the grassroots creative and technology community a cohesive programme of events, a network of special interest groups, and providing open access to both physical and virtual community collaboration environments.

The GIST Community

The GIST Foundation works with and for the benefit of the GIST Community – Grassroots participants, Innovation doers and thinkers, Socially conscious and Technology geeks.

The Community is represented by both individuals and special interest groups, organised by community champions with the support and resources of The GIST Foundation. Groups provide specific forums for like-minded people that enable focused interaction and and an opportunity to improve skills through informal knowledge sharing and peer learning. Groups may be created whenever a desire is surfaced, and survive for as long as the community deems them useful.

The Foundation works to build bridges between the GIST community and the business, academic, third and public sectors.

The GIST Hub

The GIST Hub (http://thegisthub.net) is the online heart of The GIST Community. The Hub provides a dedicated space for online interaction between members of the community, for sharing ideas and for meeting collaborators. The Hub also brings together news from all the events and special interest groups, providing a coordinated calendar of activities and encouraging cross-group interaction.

GIST Conversations

GIST Conversations bring a new dimension to grassroots events., putting dialogue, interaction and informal knowledge-sharing at the heart of a day of exploring ideas, research and experience around a given theme. The format is a cross between the speakeasy, a seminar and an unconference.  The programme is decided by the attendant participants based on their interest areas, leading to human-scale conversations facilitated by the GIST Foundation.

The first GIST Conversation explored the theme of participation, and many more engaging topics are on the drawing board for the coming months.

GIST Events

GIST Events aim to give the community a truly inspirational experience. The events are founded on the concepts of inclusion and participation, and spark whole new levels of engagement.

Recent GIST events include Geeks in the Peaks 2010, taking members of the community out of their traditional environments to enjoy a unique combination of collaboration and discovery in a highly sociable context.
