Shacknet: GIST Lab Workshop

Come and play. We’re putting the ideas from the June Shacknet meetup into play in a weekend of building cool stuff to transform the GIST Lab space, while, of course, playing around with hardware and software.

If you can join the June Shacknet meetup that’s great, but even if not, do come along and get stuck in.  It’s free to join in, though registration is required as space is limited. Donations of programmable kit to throw into the mix are also very welcome.

UPDATE: The Shacknet team have drawn up some amazing ideas to build a modular TimeLord that serves multiple purposes:

  • it keeps the time – the Lab hasn’t got a functioning clock, so this is vital
  • it acts as a countdown for events: GIST meetups aren’t the best time kept, so this makes sure we start and end in time for folks to enjoy the banter
  • it has a customisable chassis for different events, so each meetup has its own unique style and brand
  • it has a speaker for kicking out sound, which comes in really handy when time runs out or when …
  • it checks for Twitter mentions, at which point
  • it doles out #sweets4tweets. Enough said.
  • it comes in a modular cabinet with a stylish antique wood effect, for great looks combined with total portability and future expansion.
  • it will eventually be solar powered and do all sorts of other things, but this is plenty to power on with over the weekend.
  • it’s all driven by Arduino.

To top it all, it has a knob-on-the-top which we haven’t decided what to do with. Join in and help design the TimeLord!
